Where Have All the Bumper Stickers Gone?
When we were campaigning for Bernie Sanders before the June California primary, we encountered about 95% positive responses to his message. But on our routes, we saw very few bumper stickers. Those we did see were for Bernie, not any other candidate (including Trump).
I live in South Orange County, one of Southern California’s wealthiest areas and noted as a Republican bastion. This is The Duke’s territory. If you don’t know who that is here’s your link.
I also teach at a local college, one of the largest in the state. During the primary, I saw no bumper stickers in the college parking lots. In 2008, nearly every car had an Obama sticker. Every window in South Los Angeles had an Obama-Hope poster. About a third sported them in 2012. 2016? Zero evidence any election is going on.
In February, I drove to visit my husband in Phoenix and took a side trip to hike in the Superstition Mountains. I did not find the Lost Dutchman mine, but I did see a number of vehicles with Ted Cruz stickers. “Someone’s for Ted,” I thought.
