Old people ruin everything

Brexit now Trump.

I was completely confident that we would not Leave the EU, I didn’t want us to leave on the premise of xenophobia and look what happened. Now I wake up this morning, 7:30am to see Donald Trump being elected as the new president of the United States even after all the vitriol he spat.

Both, Brexit and Trump have many parallels and one of them being old people. It just sucks, the youth will be left with the consequences of the decisions from the elderly for decades to come.

The demographics

  • The older the voters, the more likely they were to have voted to leave the EU. Nearly three quarters (73%) of 18 to 24 year-olds voted to remain, falling to under two thirds (62%) among 25–34s.
  • A majority of those aged over 45 voted to leave, rising to 60% of those aged 65 or over.

Let’s look at the american presidential election

Look at the difference between between millennials and baby boomers. I feel like those 40+ are voting for a reality that doesn’t exist anymore. In my opinion, those 40+ are less likely to embrace new forms of media, what they consume is usually passive. Fearmongering has shown to be effective in both the Brexit and presidential election race. They fear immigration will ruin the identity and culture of “their” country and that immigration is to blame for what’s wrong in society.

Whereas us millennial voters are exposed to new information and a variety of new media to give us more balanced information. Rather than just watching Fox, we have Twitter, Facebook, Youtube just to name a few.

The solution just can’t be, “we wait until they’re not around anymore”, maybe the solution is we need to build better relations with the elderly and show them the beauty of new ideas and change, another could reducing the voting age to 16–17 as they did in the Scottish Referendum.

It’s a just shame, sigh.
